Annual Black History Month Celebration
Held annually in February (dates vary year to year), the Coker University Department of Dance, Music, and Theatre celebrates Black History Month through a collaborative effort from Coker University students. This includes staged plays and original works.
Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration in Dillon
This event is held annually in January on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The event includes a march down MLK Jr. Blvd from Radford Blvd to J. V. Martin Jr. High, which culminates in a celebration in the gymnasium.
Wilson High School Alumni Weekend
Wilson High School was founded in 1869 by Freedmen’s Bureau as a school for African-American children. Since that time, Wilson has been recognized for their National Merit and International Baccalaureate Scholars, SC State Championship Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams, and award-winning visual, choral, and instrumental arts program.
Wilson Alumni Association holds an annual Homecoming Weekend in October. This three day event includes student vs faculty basketball game, the Homecoming football game, and an alumni parade in Downtown Florence. For more information, visit their website.
Sankofa Festival
The Sankofa Festival is held annually in late June or early July at Timrod Park. The activities provide an opportunity to celebrate and learn about African and African-American history and culture through dance, drumming, drama, song, poetry, food ways, and storytelling. The event helps to unite, enlighten, enrich, and inspire the community.
